Can a Muslim Woman Marry a Christian Man? Your Options for a Nikah and a Legal Marriage

Published October 17, 2026

Two people holding hands in a gesture of support

If you are a Muslim woman who wants to marry a Christian man, or if you are supporting someone who does, you may have been told different things by different people. This guide gives you an honest, calm answer and the options that are open to you. It is not a religious ruling, and the people closest to your situation, such as an imam or scholar you trust, are the right people to speak to for your own case.

The short answer

The mainstream Islamic position, held by the four Sunni schools of law and by most scholars and fiqh councils today, is that a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man in a nikah, including a Christian man, unless he is Muslim. A small number of contemporary scholars have argued otherwise, but the imams on ImamConnect follow the mainstream view, and each imam decides his own practice. For that reason we cannot arrange a nikah between a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man.

That is not the end of the road for a wedding. You can still have a legally valid civil marriage, and we can refer you to a legally authorized officiant.

What an "interfaith nikah" usually means

When an imam says he is open to an interfaith nikah, he almost always means a Muslim man marrying a chaste Christian or Jewish woman, which most scholars permit. That is the meaning of the interfaith filter on ImamConnect. It does not cover a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man.

Your options

  • A legal civil marriage. This is a real, legally recognized marriage that does not depend on a nikah. In Canada this is usually a city hall or municipal office, or a civil marriage officiant authorized by your province. It can be a short, simple ceremony or a larger celebration with family, readings and vows that reflect your values.
  • A private conversation with an imam. If you want to talk through your situation, an imam can listen without pressure. We can ask one who is experienced and gentle with these conversations to reach out to you.
  • Your partner's own journey. If he is interested in Islam, that is his own decision, made freely and sincerely. It is not something to rush or to treat as a requirement for a wedding date, and nobody on ImamConnect will pressure him.

How ImamConnect can help

Tell us your city and your preferred date and we will do two things. We can refer you to legally authorized officiants for a civil ceremony, and we can connect you privately with an imam if you would like to talk. We will not judge your situation or push you in any direction.

A few common questions

Can a Muslim woman have a nikah with a Christian man?
Most imams and scholars hold that a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man in a nikah, whether he is Christian, Jewish or of another faith, unless he is Muslim. The imams on ImamConnect follow this mainstream position, so we cannot arrange that nikah. We can refer you to a legally authorized officiant for a civil marriage instead.
Can a Muslim man marry a Christian or Jewish woman?
Most scholars permit a Muslim man to marry a chaste Christian or Jewish woman (a woman from the People of the Book). Some imams on ImamConnect are open to officiating this, and you can use the interfaith filter to find them. Each imam decides for himself, so ask before you book.
Can we get legally married even if we cannot have a nikah?
Yes. A civil marriage is a legal marriage and does not depend on a nikah. An authorized civil officiant can marry you in a ceremony that reflects your values, with readings, vows and family. We can point you to legally authorized officiants if you tell us your city and date.
Does my partner have to convert to have a nikah?
No one should be pressured to change their faith in order to marry. A nikah between two Muslims requires that both be Muslim, but becoming Muslim is a sincere personal decision made freely, not a condition to be met for a wedding date. An imam will gladly talk with him privately if he is interested, with no obligation.
Is a civil marriage the same as a nikah?
No. A civil marriage is a legal contract recognized by the government. A nikah is a religious contract with its own conditions. Whether a particular civil marriage satisfies religious requirements for you is a question to take to an imam or scholar you trust.
Can ImamConnect still help us?
Yes. Message us with your city and preferred date. We can refer you to legally authorized officiants for a civil ceremony, and if you would like to talk through your situation, we can ask an imam to reach out to you privately and kindly.

Not sure what applies to you?

Message us with your city and date. We can refer you to legally authorized officiants and, if you like, connect you privately with an imam. We usually reply within 15 minutes.
