Can an imam in Toronto legally marry us?
Only if they are authorized to perform marriages in Ontario. 106 of the 111 imams listed for Toronto are registered officiants, so they can do the nikah and the legal marriage in one ceremony. On ImamConnect, every profile clearly shows either "Registered officiant (legal + religious)" or "Religious ceremony only". Filter for registered officiants if you need the legal marriage as well.
Do we need an Ontario marriage licence before the nikah?
If you want the marriage legally registered, yes. You get the marriage licence from the province before the ceremony and bring it on the day. The imam cannot issue the licence for you. For a religious-only nikah, no licence is required.
How much is a marriage licence in Toronto?
City of Toronto Marriage Services lists the fee as $180 (HST does not apply). You apply at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West (1st floor), or North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge Street. What languages can the nikah be conducted in Toronto?
The imams listed for Toronto conduct ceremonies in English, Arabic, Urdu, Gujarati, Turkish and Bosnian. Each profile lists the languages the imam can conduct the full ceremony in, not just speak casually.
Can a Muslim woman have a nikah with a non-Muslim partner?
The imams on ImamConnect follow the mainstream position that a Muslim woman's nikah requires a Muslim husband, so we cannot arrange it. A Muslim man may marry a Christian or Jewish woman, and some imams are open to that (use the interfaith filter). If your situation is different, message us: we can refer you to legally authorized officiants for a civil marriage and can connect you privately with an imam if you would like to talk.
